Casting Study: Transmission Selector Tube – Ford
The original selector tube was designed as a magnesium-steel assembly. It was redesigned as a one-piece ZA-8 alloy die casting. The ZA-8 casting replaced steel without loss of torque strength and net shape casting produces a complex, multifunctional component. The one-piece design incorporates the park-reverse-neutral-drive-low arm for gear selection and the parking brake cancel cam. These two functions were previously added as attachments. The cost saving is estimated at $1.50 per tube.
