Casting Study: Attachment Insert
The part : This high performance self-drilling insert for plaster board (partition, lining, ceiling) is always delivered with its self-tapping screw, forming two parts. The insert is composed of two rigidly attached and then articulated (body and toggle) and is obtained in a single casting operation. The manufacturing : The excellent fluidity of Zamak, the possibility of making complex and precise tooling, were important properties in making the insert in which the two parts (the cap and the toggle) form a single part out of the die. These two parts are connected by four 0.9 mm diameter pins, and do not separate until during installation and then remain nested one inside the other, the toggle being able to translate and rotate by two 2 mm diameter pivots. The specifier’s choice : Zamak was chosen for several reasons. In addition to its excellent mechanical properties, it does not break and offers a high hardness allowing the use of self-tapping screws. It also has a very good natural corrosion resistance so that it can be used without surface treatment, and guaranteeing that there will be no rust stains. Apart from these advantages, pressure die casting is a particularly economic technique for this type of lare eries production. Part supplied by Sigre.
